Semnan Arg Gate

One of Semnan's most famous attractions is the Semnan Arg Gate, which has become a symbol of this city and has spectacular engravings and illustrations.

You can easily find the symbol of this city, the Semnan Arg Gate. Just go to the Ag Square to visit this beautiful gate. This gate tells many interesting stories. The Arg gate is 4 meters high and is one of the most important and famous monuments of Semnan. The era of this gate date back to Qajar dynasty. Its decoration is so beautiful that it catches your regard. This gate is the only relic of the old Arg of Semnan and, its glory shows the old Arg well. It is easy to imagine the glory of the former Arg at this place with visiting this gate. The Args were once an important center of government.

This gate dates back to the reign of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. At that time, the government built the building that consisting of office in the corner of the Semnan city, known as the Semnan Arg. The complex consisted of buildings such as a telegraph room, Ab anbar (An Ab anbar is a traditional reservoir or cistern of drinking water in Greater Iran.), a bathroom, and so on.

You might be interested to know that the construction of this gate dates back to Nasser al-Din Shah's travel to Semnan. He stayed three days in the Semnan on the way to Mashhad in 1867. There was a building at the time that had 12 different towers and a southern gate, but no gate on the north side.  During his short stay in Semnan, Nasser al-Din Shah ordered the ruler of the city to build a northern gate for the Arg, a gate built during the reign of Anushirvan in 1884. One of its most prominent features is the portal that painted on its seven-colored tiles, the historic battle of Rostam and Dave. This gate is in the list of national monuments of Iran in 1980 and is one of Semnan great attractions.

• What is the best time to go?
  Semnan province is known for desert land, mountains, and forests. The strategic geographical location of this city and its diverse nature, have created a wide variety of climatic conditions in the province. The northern part of the province is adjacent to the high mountains of Alborz, so it has a cold and mountainous climate. As you head south, the climate gets warmer, until you experience a hot desert climate in the south. Most areas of this province have a warm and dry climate. The best season for traveling to Semnan is spring. We suggest you travel there in May.

• Getting there?
  The Arg gate that now known as the Arg Square is located at the intersection of Taleghani and Sheikh Fazl Ol-lah Nouri. You should know that you must drive about three hours from Tehran to Semnan.
